Melawan Kaum Nekrofilia

Slum tourism Visitors see the real Jakarta

Posted on 29. Jul, 2009 by admin in Blog News

Story Highlights:

  • Ronny Poluan leads tours of a Jakarta slum to show visitors the ‘real’ capital
  • Tours cost about $34 — half of that goes to Poluan, the other half to the locals
  • Some critics say the tours exploit the poor and teach them to rely on handouts
  • Tour covers a market, soy bean cake and tofu factories, meeting residents

Hidden in the alleyways behind Jakarta’s fancy malls and in between the high-rise apartment buildings is what Ronny Poluan, a former film maker, calls the “real Jakarta.”

It is not far from the glitz and glam that dominates the capital’s skyline, yet it is a side of the city that few foreigners ever see.

“I want them to (have an) authentic view,” Poluan, who runs “Jakarta Hidden Tours,” said as he took a group of Australians through the winding maze of a central Jakarta slum.

“I’m running out of rice,” an old lady mumbles in the doorway of her tiny dark home as the group passes by.

Further along, little girls push their faces into wire fencing, while another group of children draw 36-year-old Daniel Knott into a game of cards. Knott, a volunteer for various NGOs, and his wife, who works for AUSAID, live in Jakarta and have been to the slums before. But it is the first time their friends, Kerri Bell and her husband Phil Paschke, have been to Indonesia.

Knott said he felt it was important to bring the visiting couple here.

“I think Jakarta is a city of contrasts,” he said. “There’s a lot of shopping malls and kitschy stuff, but it’s also a lot of normal people. And, it’s fun to come and hang out with the locals, actually.”

“It’s fantastic,” Kerri Bell said. “I’ve been in Asia once before and we didn’t want to just gloss over the surface and see all the things you can see in a western country. It feels to me much more like the real Jakarta, to see what drives it. To see that is so much more valuable than coming and lying on the beach.”

Killed, Skinned, Skewered dan Served at Yogyas Sate Secret

Posted on 28. Jul, 2009 by admin in Blog News

One of Yogyakarta?s best-kept culinary secrets is a small sate warung (stall) that is only open in the evenings. ?Unless I am invited to go to a hotel or a celebration somewhere, I open every day of the week from 6:30 p.m. till 12:30 a.m or later,? said Ahmad Sobarry, known as Barry, the owner and chef of Sate Klathak Pak Barry. The tiny warung is inside the Jejeran traditional market on the road toward Imogiri, around 5 kilometers south of the Yogyakarta bus terminal. A list of its regular clients reads like a who?s who of the city and includes Prince Paku Alam, politician Amien Rais, comedian and actor Butet Kartaredjasa, fashion designer Nita Azhar and writer Agus Noor.

But what is so special about Barry?s sate? ?I only use healthy, young, fat-tailed lambs because they don?t smell as much as goats,? Barry says, ?and I always kill and prepare my sheep myself ? I don?t buy meat that other people have killed.

?But most importantly, I invented the name sate klathak to describe my special spiceless sate. Because I don?t use any spices I must choose the best meat. So my prices are higher than other sate sellers, and I think that also attracts customers. People like to eat something that costs a little more but tastes better. ?

Tim Severins heaven on earth the Banda Islands

Posted on 28. Jul, 2009 by admin in Blog News

I fell in love with the Banda Islands, a group of 10 lush volcanic islands in Indonesia, when I visited them a few years ago. I sailed down there on a prahu ? a small native sailing boat with a rectangular sail ? and discovered a rare part of the world that was absolutely unspoilt and idyllic.

The islands were colonised by the Dutch, who grew nutmeg there, and for a long time they were virtually the world’s only source of the spice. It’s estimated that the Dutch sold more than a million guilders worth of nutmeg ? all from these tiny islands.

As a result of the Dutch connection, the islands are dotted with these lovely Dutch colonial houses, many of which have survived thanks to the islands’ remoteness. What’s more, they are blessed with the most stunning scenery, most notably a volcano called Gunung Api (Fire Mountain), which has a wonderful interior lagoon.
