Tourist Attractions of Cambodia

Posted on 05. Nov, 2009 by admin in Blog News

The Kingdom of Cambodia is a country in South East Asia with a population of more than fifteen million people. The kingdom’s capital and largest city is Phnom Penh. Cambodia is the successor state of the once powerful Hindu and Buddhist Khmer Empire, which ruled most of the Indochinese Peninsula between the eleventh and fourteenth centuries. A citizen of Cambodia is usually identified as “Cambodian” or “Khmer,” though the latter strictly refers to ethnic Khmers. Most Cambodians are Theravada Buddhists of Khmer extraction, but the country also has a substantial number of predominantly Muslim Cham, as well as ethnic Chinese, Vietnamese and small animist hill tribes. The country borders Thailand to its west and northwest, Laos to its northeast, and Vietnam to its east and southeast. In the south it faces the Gulf of Thailand. The geography of Cambodia is dominated by the Mekong river (colloquial Khmer: Tonle Thom or “the great river”) and the Tonlé Sap (“the fresh water lake”), an important source of fish.

Cambodia’s main industries are garments, tourism, and construction. In 2007, foreign visitors to Angkor Wat numbered more than 4 million. Any list of Cambodia’s tourist attractions should have the following in them:

The Virachey National Park in Cambodia – It lies along the boundaries of Vietnam and Laos. This national park was set up to counter the avoidable abuse and ruin of natural biodiversity.

Yeak Laom Volcanic Lake – One of the well -known Cambodia tourist attractions, it was formed due to volcanic eruption. This lake and its forested surroundings is one of the most scenic spots in the Cambodian region of Ratanakiri.

Bokor National Park – Another one of the well-known tourist destinations in Cambodia, this national park is the last refuge to many rare species like the tiger and the elephant. The breathtaking beauty of Vietnamese and Cambodian coastal line can be admired from its lofty heights.

Kompong Luong – Among the other Cambodia tourist attractions, this floating village is worth viewing. Popular for its scenic setup with its vivid shops, restaurants, and petrol stations- all floating on the Great Lake, Kompong Luong is indeed a great experience in itself. The Tonle Sap Lake, the gigantic dumbbell shaped fresh water lake forms a picturesque background to it.

Kampong Cham – One of the top tourist destinations in Cambodia, it is one of those sites, which reflects the real charm of this nation’s cultural heritage along with Preah Vihear, Cambodia ‘s ancient temple site.

Angkor Archaeological Park – The jewel in the crown of all tourist attractions in Cambodia is this international landmark. Placed in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites, this archeological spot has immense historical and archeological significance. The Angkor Wat Temple, the Bayon Temple and the Angkor Thom are the main attractions of Angkor Archeological Park.

Cambodia offers not only such breathtaking sights but also ultra comfortable accommodation to the all that flock to it to behold its majestic beauty. Although the price range of the hotels in Cambodia is pretty large yet the comfort found even in the budget hotels are quite endearing. Some of the luxury hotels known for their services and amenities are Borei Bokor Hotel Kampot, Prince D’Angkor hotel Siem Reap, Cambodiana hotel Phnom Penh. While Steung Siem Reap hotel and Goldiana hotel Phnom Penh are for those who are more budget conscious.

The Leading Tourist Attractions of Jakarta

Posted on 30. Oct, 2009 by admin in Blog News

Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia and is one of the leading travel and business destinations of South East Asia. Although the city might not have the same level of appeal as Singapore or Bangkok, there are certainly plenty of interesting attractions and wonderful places which travelers can visit in the Indonesian capital.

I have been to Jakarta a number of times and I have compiled a list of my favorite tourist attractions.

Ancol Dreamland

The place to stay if for travelers with kids is definitely Ancol Dreamland which is a rather large amusement park and which is located next to the water. There are plenty of shops, rides, various other types of entertainment, resorts and food and beverage outlets. The theme park is open 24 hours per day although some of the rides and other venues might have more specific times of business.

Museum Fatahillah

This is also known as the Jakarta History Museum and is off course a great place to visit for those of you that would like to learn more about the history and culture of this outstanding city as well as about the former Dutch East India Company. It is located inside of the former Batavian city hall which was built in 1710 by the former Dutch colonists.

Planetarium

The Planetarium is popular with both local residents as well as foreign visitors and first opened its doors in 1969. English tours of the premises can be organized Tuesday through Sunday.

Glodok

This part of town is also known as Chinatown and is a wonderful area of the city to walk around and explore the small streets, shops and excellent restaurants.  If you would like to do some shopping for IT products then be sure to visit the excellent Glodok market which is well known for its cheap prices. Business hours are Monday through Sunday from 09:00 until 15:00.

Gereja Kathedral

One of the most important Catholic structures in the entire country is the Gereja Kathedral which opened its doors nearly 110 years ago. It is designed in a neo-gothic style and is definitely worth visiting. There is also a museum located inside the cathedral and the opening hours of the attraction are daily from 05:30 until 12:00 and from 16:00 until 19:00.

Istana Merdeka

The Istana Merdeka was called the Koningsplein Paleis when the Dutch ruled the nation and is currently the presidential palace. This beautiful building was build towards the end of the 18th century and is one of the most impressive sights you will find in the Indonesian capital.

Ubud is the center of the island’s art community. There are various art galleries where you can purchase local art work and the Purl Lukisan Art Museum and the Neka Museum are also definitely worth a visit.

Beaches

There are many wonderful beaches on Bali which you can visit. Some of them are suitable for snorkeling and swimming whilst others are excellent for surfing. Some of the nicest beaches on the island include Jimberan beach, Nusa Dua, Sanur and Kuta beach.

Gunung Agung

This volcano is also known as Mount Agung and plays a very important part in Balinese culture and religion. If you have never been to a volcano before this you should definitely head over to Gunung Agung.

Tanah Lot

One of the most visited and most photographed attractions on Bali is Tanah Lot which is located on the west coast of the island. It is a magnificent temple which was built on a large piece of rock and is surrounded by the water. Many travelers prefer to visit Tanah Lot during sun set as this temple is simply stunning with the sun setting behind it.

Dolphin Watching
An activity which should be on every traveler’s to do list is to go dolphin watching. There are two places where you can do this and which are at Nusa Dua and at Lovina. Lovina is located on the north side of this isle but most people tend to agree that this is the best location for dolphin watching.

If you like to party then you will definitely have a great vacation. The best nightlife venues are located in Kuta beach, Seminyak and Legian and include Double 6 and Gado Gado. There are also full moon parties organized every month for those of you that enjoy trance and techno music.

Indonesias June tourist arrivals up 41 pct y y

Posted on 03. Aug, 2009 by admin in Blog News

Indonesia’s foreign tourist arrivals rose just 4.1 percent in June from a year ago, data showed on Monday, as a global economic slowdown curbed foreign travel.
Tourism accounts for about 3 percent of gross domestic product in Southeast Asia’s biggest economy, but some areas, including the resort island of Bali, are heavily dependent on tourism for jobs and growth.

In June, 550,582 foreign tourists visited Indonesia, up from 529,100 a year ago, while in the first half the number rose 2.2 percent to 2.97 million people.

“Although the global crisis has affected foreign arrivals to Indonesia, the impact hasn’t been significant,” said Carla Parengkuan, executive director of the Indonesian Hotels Association, adding that the impact might be felt within the next three to six months.

Indonesia hopes to attract 7 million tourists this year, up from 6.32 million in 2008, although this target was seen as over-optimistic by some in the industry even before the bomb attacks on two luxury hotels in Jakarta last month.

The association and the statistics bureau did not provide data about trip cancellations.

Australian Tourist missing after snorkelling

Posted on 01. Aug, 2009 by admin in Blog News

AN AUSTRALIAN tourist went missing while snorkelling alone off Indonesia’s Lombok island, an official said on Saturday.

‘The man had gone snorkelling in Gili Trawangan on Wednesday morning but he failed to return in the evening,’ Mataram district search and rescue chief Budisma told AFP.

‘We sent out two rescue boats and 22 personnel to look for him since Thursday but we couldn’t find him. It’s been a few days… the waves are big, we fear he might not survive,’ he added.

The man had planned to snorkel in Gili Trawangan on the northwest tip of Lombok and move south to Teluk Nara and Bangko-Bangko, Budisma said.

‘He shouldn’t have snorkelled alone. The people in the area said they had seen a man surfacing from the waters a few times. After that he disappeared,’ he added.

The Gili Islands are a popular tourist destination known for their sandy beaches, coral reefs, and colourful fish.
